QR Code reader and Video apps for effective mlearning

For this weeks ‘Try it yourself’ activity we have been tasked with making a video using a video creating app with a mobile device. When then need to post it to You tube or our favorite video sharing site or our own blog and generate a (quick response) QR Code. Then post the QR code to our blog or twitter.

I have cheated a little and used already prepared You Tube videos that explained the use of the video creating apps to create my QR codes from. They were really easy to make and fun to change the colours and elements. I used Unitag to do them.

Some of the ways my MOOC mates suggested to use these apps were:

  • student or teacher can create a short video about how to use a piece of equipment and create a QR code and attach the code to the equipment so anyone can easily access the how to video. The video could  be stopped, rewound or fast forwarded as required.
  • have a treasure hunt of QR codes around a room that students hunt down and find out information of an upcoming topic as a way to set the scene for the topic
  • create a QR code for learners to gain instant access to the resources required for a topic, the resources are then automatically bookmarked on their mobile devices for future reference.

Photo Collage Apps for mLearning

One of the  ‘Try it yourself’ activities that I have participated in with the MOOC I am doing is to use a photo collage making app on a mobile device. I have not used many apps but I took up the challenge and have downloaded an app for both my phone and Ipad.

On my phone I used the android free app Photo Grid.

Both apps were very easy to use. What I found a bit trickier was to get the photo collage that I created onto twitter where I had to post it for ‘homework’ and to get them here on my blog.

Photo collagePhotoGrid_1366322648010I think my three pets are gorgeous. Orlando my 10 year old puppy, Beneke and Tiffany are both Birman cats, 12 and 11 years old.

Some of the ways that my MOOC mates have suggested that photo collages can be used with learners are:

  • introductory collage of photos of themselves and present the collage to the class
  • use a collage to present information gathered on a given topic of research

I would love you to add suggestions of how you would use these apps with your learners so I can increase the above list.

What is a MOOC?

I have learnt a new acronym recently – MOOC, I had to ask –  what is a MOOC?

A MOOC is a massive open online course. The following video helps.

I am now participating in a MOOC about mlearning. I  have also done a bit more research on other free online courses that are available. I have been blown away by how many free courses are available on just about every topic imaginable. We really are lucky to have access to so much learning.

6 principles of mobile design

The below table has been taken from an article Mobile Instructional Design Principles for Adult Learners from the University of Oregon. It is a great summation of a framework to use when designing mobile instructions.

Six Mobile Instructional Design Principles for Adult Learners
Principle #1: Develop a simple and intuitive interface design
The usability should be simple and consistent to enable learners to quickly and easily learn how to use the interface.
Principle #2: Integrate interactive multi-media
Take advantage of multi-media formats (audio and video) over text, due to the small-screen display of most mobile devices.
Principle #3: Build short, modular lessons and activities
Design small chunks for easier integration into busy schedules and to successfully compete against other distractions.
Principle #4: Design content that is engaging and entertaining
Activities designed to engage students should be applicable, entertaining, and suited to every day needs.
